Walmart Opens Giant, High-Tech Consolidation Center in Central Pennsylvania

GlobeSt.com, August 15, 2022

Company’s biggest in the US, it’s the retailer’s first in eastern part of the country.

Walmart’s high-tech consolidation center in Lebanon, Penn., is now open, according to Transwestern Development Company (TDC) and its equity partner, QuadReal Property Group. Located in central Pennsylvania and covering 400,000 square feet, it’s the mega-retailer’s second such center. This one is slightly larger than its first 340,000-square-foot high-tech consolidation center in Colton, Calif.

Brian Banaszynski, northeast regional partner at TDC, said in prepared remarks that “Success in the e-commerce space hinges on maximizing supply chain efficiencies while continuing to meet consumers’ expectations.”

The building was constructed to accommodate Walmart’s logistics technology, which impacts space design, ceiling height and other property features, Banaszynski tells GlobeSt.com.

Banaszynski said TDC builds both build-to-suit and speculative industrial product. Last year, General Plumbing Supply, Inc. signed a long-term, 300,000-square-foot lease at Piscataway Logistics Center prior to project delivery. He tells GlobeSt.com that currently, TDC has two 750,000-square-foot facilities under construction in the Northeast – one for a global 3PL and one for a Fortune 150 company. Both projects began on a speculative basis, but tenants were secured early in the process.

“We just completed a 500,000-square-foot speculative facility in Hamburg, Penn. (still available), and will be announcing a new build-to-suit project in the coming weeks,” Banaszynski said. At present, TDC has 51 industrial projects totaling 34.14 million square feet under construction, in pre-development or recently delivered nationwide, including more than 8.98 million square feet in the Northeast.
