TYP Aims to Keep Momentum Strong for 2021

Since its inception, TYP has provided unique, rewarding opportunities for networking, career development and community service. This year, the group has supported team members who, maybe for the first time in their careers, are navigating an uncertain environment that requires heightened agility and teamwork.

To ensure TYP continues to deliver extraordinary experiences for young professionals throughout the country, we are pleased to announce that Kelly O’Shea, Human Resources Business Partner, has joined the national leadership team for TYP. We sat down with her to discuss the ongoing value of this network and what’s in store for 2021.

Q: Congratulations on your new leadership role with TYP! What will this entail in 2021?

Thank you! I’m thrilled to join the already outstanding leadership team of Kelly Hendrex and Thomas Savage. TYPers can expect a resurgence of local and national activity, both virtual and in-person, aimed at nurturing future leaders through networking, idea exchange, professional development and community service.

Q: What kind of programming are you most looking forward to in the coming year? What do you feel will be most challenging?

In 2020, we’ve had to think differently about TYP engagement and how the program reaches our team members. As a result, we’ve learned a lot of new skills. We anticipate facing these same challenges for the first half of 2021. Thomas, Kelly and I have started brainstorming, taking best practices from local markets and national Transwestern programs that turned to remote summits in 2020, such as the Business Analyst Program and Cyberlab. Teams has proven to be a valuable tool and will allow us more collaboration and exposure across TYP at a national level. Locally, we cannot wait for the fun and valuable in-person events that remind team members of the benefits of working in an office environment. This is made possible through the work of our local TYP leaders.

Q: How does an initiative like TYP bring value to the company as a whole?

In short, TYP supports retention, development and engagement with TW and our local communities. The individuals who make up TYP represent 29{486b2a1f74edcc5180758f2b50c14395cd5abf419f5fc0bc049abfed8e823f44} of our workforce. Through our professional development initiative, we aim to equip bright young professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to become strong future leaders of Transwestern. Training needs at this point in their careers include a lot of the basics – understanding our firm and how it fits within the commercial real estate industry, learning about different Transwestern offerings, and perfecting important business skills like time management and communication. Through community service efforts, TYP serves as a brand ambassador for Transwestern.

Q: How can younger professionals lean on TYP for insight or guidance? Can you share any examples of how you’ve seen this happen this year?

TYP’s access to senior leadership – before, during, and I’m sure after the pandemic – is invaluable. Transwestern continues to invest in a program that develops professional skills for our junior talent and has also taken time to address many of our concerns in 2020. For many of us, this is the first major crisis we’ve faced during our careers. TYP has provided a platform to ask difficult questions about career stability, the health and future of Transwestern, and return-to-the-office procedures. Both informal conversations and leadership presentations have reassured and encouraged many younger team members that Transwestern has experienced complex challenges in the past, and has emerged a stronger company thanks to our dedicated leaders and thoughtful business strategy.
